Project Overview
This project was a significant addition to and restoration of the American Pharmacists Association Headquarters, a National Historic Landmark on the Mall in Washington, D.C. Because the design required a great deal of detail and the color had to be controlled relative to the historic structure, the facade material choice was of critical importance. For those reasons, precast concrete was selected, providing design versatility at an economical cost.
Precast Solution
Numerous details—plane changes, belt courses, cornices, and window surrounds—were possible within the budget constraints. The color and finish were also controlled through the use of precast concrete, which was particularly necessary because of the relationship to the historic building.
The precast concrete was also helpful in accommodating the blast resistance required for the structure. The American Pharmacists Headquarters is a certified LEED gold building and the addition is a sympathetic background building to the historic landmark. |
