Project Overview
The design was specifically developed to protect the scenic character of the surrounding parkland. A spread footing used for the central pier was located in the same place as the existing foundation. Instead of excavating and replacing the previous foundation it was incorporated into the design of the new foundation. The old bridge also enjoyed a second life as falsework before ultimately being recycled. After the deck was removed, the existing steel girders were welded together to form box beams to support the new segments during erection.
Precast Solution
The structure of this pedestrian/equestrian bridge consists of a precast channel design—a segmental deck with the primary support girders integrated with the parapets. The design allowed an increase in clearance and elimination of two of three existing piers while maintaining existing approach grades. As a fully post-tensioned design, the deck is highly durable and requires little maintenance. Because the deck is part of the precast section, the entire superstructure was erected in only four weeks. |
